When you order appliques & onlays for woodwork and furniture from Decorators Supply, you are joining a manufacturing tradition that extends back to 1883. The formula for our composition ornaments has an impressive pedigree dating as far back as the famous British architect Robert Adam from the mid - 1700’s. Furniture with composition appliques & onlays can be found in major museum collections including those found in the Winterthur, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts.

There are three (3) primary ingredients in our composition material:

1)  Calcium Carbonate (It is a common substance found in rocks as the minerals calcite and aragonite.  It is  medicinally used as a calcium supplement or as an antacid but excessive consumption can be hazardous).

2)  Hide Glue and 

3)  Water.  Numerous other ingredients are added in smaller quantities such as molasses and rosin oils.

Yes, composition ornaments accept stain.  However, keep in mind two important factors:

1)     Our composition material exhibits a Khaki color after manufacturing.  As a result, it is only possible to stain the darker end of the wood species – mahogany, cherry etc. Staining it lighter than the material is not possible.

2)     Our composition ornaments are denser than wood.  Briefly, apply the stain, smooth out the stain throughout the ornament with a dry brush, and then let the stain set for a couple of hours.  Add additional coats to color match as needed.  See our staining video for more detailed instructions. 

1)     Ceiling Ornament Groups: The designs found in this section are based upon careful research performed by our founders during our formative years (1890-1910).  Each group offers matching center, side and corner ornaments as well as running mouldings.  These various ornaments are applied to your existing ceiling.  These design components can be ordered as a set or as individual ornaments.

a.     Louis XIV Period (Ceiling Groups 768 & 792):  Characterized by rigor and symmetry, ornaments from this group are imbued with balance and majesty

b.     Louis XV Period (Ceiling Group 719):  Famous for its Rococo Style with its curved and sinuous lines – with asymmetry being a guiding principal.  Voltaire and others from this period criticized what they viewed as excesses of the Rococo Style and it eventually moved towards the overall shapes and ornaments of Rococo but arranged symmetrically, as found in our Louis XV ceiling

c.     Colonial & Empire Period (Ceiling Group 738 & 734-1):  Reflect the influence of the Adams and American Empire (Federal) styles – important during the early years of our country’s development. 

2)     Geometric Tracery (2964, 2964-30, TRA100, TRA101):  Inspired by the ribbed vaults and pointed arches introduced through Gothic architecture; most familiar as the architecture of many of the great cathedrals, abbeys and churches of Europe.  The popularity of our original “Gothic tracery pattern” has lead us to create other eye popping tracery patterns.  In these ceilings, single designed patterns create intricate secondary shapes.

3)     Plaster Ceiling Panels:  As full panels, these patterns cover the entire ceiling surface area.  As such, they are the most expensive ceiling designs we offer.

a.     Old English Ceilings (Series 25001B & 25005):  Our original designs incorporate the classic hammered surface effect with historic English ornaments such as the 5-peteled Tudor Rose, the Thistle and of course the Fleur di Lis.  Our other versions focus on the geometric aspect of these panels by minimizing or eliminating the traditional Old English ornament.

b.     Italian Coffered Ceiling (Series 25009 & 25009A):  Based upon Renaissance architecture, which originated in Florence the early 15^th century before spreading throughout Europe.  This ceiling design incorporates an array of complex ornaments with richly carved edges and bold center ornament incorporated into an octagonal shape.  Our variation to the original design a smooth octagonal center in lieu of the rosette.
